My Take

Elizabeth Debicki has, for my money, the most arresting screen presence of her generation. Born in Paris, raised in Melbourne, trained first as a dancer, and you can see the dance in everything she does; even her stillness feels choreographed. She announced herself as Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby, but the awards run from 2023 through her 2024 Emmy confirmed what I had long suspected: she can carry a production's entire emotional weight from a supporting position. Plenty of actors play fragility or play poise; Debicki plays both simultaneously, which is far harder. I also love that she shows up in the Peter Rabbit films without irony. That range tells me she chooses curiosity over image.

Overview

Elizabeth Debicki (born 24 August 1990) is an Australian actress. Born in Paris and raised in Melbourne, she trained in dance before studying drama at the University of Melbourne's Victorian College of the Arts. She made her feature film debut in A Few Best Men (2011), and her first major screen role came as Jordan Baker in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby (2013).
