Takashi Miike

I've got nothing but respect for Takashi Miike, honestly. This is a guy from Yao in Osaka who shoots like the camera might rust if he stops, cranking out movies at a pace that frankly shouldn't be humanly possible. And the range is what gets me: you brace yourself for some gleefully nasty violence, then he hands you a tender kids' movie, a samurai epic, a manga adaptation, a slow-burn nightmare that crawls under your skin. You never quite know which Miike you're getting, and that unpredictability is the whole charm. He clearly works fast and trusts his gut, never precious about it. I think that's exactly why cinephiles abroad adore him so much, he refuses to sit in any one box. Japanese film is more fun because oddball lifers like him exist, and I'm glad they do.
