My Take
I genuinely love what Ellie Goulding represents in pop — she came up from Hereford with that otherworldly, breathy voice and somehow made synth-pop feel intimate rather than cold. "Lights" is one of those songs that sneaks into your subconscious and just lives there permanently, and "Love Me Like You Do" from the Fifty Shades soundtrack introduced her to a whole new audience without her having to compromise her sound at all. She studied at the University of Kent, which is a fun fact that makes her feel slightly more real and human than your average pop star. What I respect most is that she's never been a one-trick artist — she keeps pushing into different sonic territory while maintaining that distinctly Ellie quality. Five studio albums deep and she still sounds like herself, which in this industry is genuinely rare.
