My Take

What grips me about Evelyn Großmann is the timing of her career. She was born in Dresden, deep in the former East Germany, and she won the 1990 European title with a 1991 silver to follow, right as the Berlin Wall fell and the world she trained in dissolved around her. Skating demands enough precision on its own, but doing it while your entire political reality is collapsing is something else. I tend to admire athletes whose peak coincides with history's upheaval, because their results carry weight beyond the scoreboard. Hers do, and I think that deserves quiet, lasting respect.
