My Take
I have a soft spot for skaters who refuse to play it safe, and Miki Ando is exactly that kind of fighter. This is the woman who, as a teenager out of Nagoya, became the first female skater to land a quad Salchow in competition, which is the sort of audacity that makes you gasp and then immediately worry for her knees. She climbed to the very top of the sport, twice a world champion, but what sticks with me isn't the medals so much as the bouncing back: the falls, the slumps, the comebacks, all of it stubbornly human. And I love that she didn't just walk away from the ice afterward, she stayed close to it as a choreographer, shaping how the next generation moves. Tough, tearful, and quietly relentless, she's the kind of athlete I just keep rooting for.
