My Take

Fish is one of those artists I respect more the older I get. Fronting Marillion through the 1980s, he gave neo-prog a literary heart, and his lyrics always read like a poet who happened to wander into a rock band rather than a rocker reaching for depth. Coming out of tiny Dalkeith in Scotland, he built a voice that could fill arenas and break them at the same time. Even his choice to bury Derek Dick under a one-word name feels like an artist refusing to be ordinary. Now retired, he leaves a catalogue that rewards anyone willing to actually listen.

Overview

Derek William Dick (born 25 April 1958), better known by his stage name Fish, is a retired Scottish singer, songwriter and occasional actor. He was the lead singer and lyricist of the neo-prog band Marillion from 1981 until 1988.
