My Take

Flake Lorenz is one of my favorite kinds of musicians: the indispensable eccentric. As Rammstein's keyboardist and, alongside Richard Kruspe, a core composer, he sits at the center of all that Neue Deutsche Harte thunder while injecting humor and humanity into the spectacle, often by literally running across the stage. The detail I love is his roots in the East German punk band Feeling B. A musician who came up behind the Wall ended up powering one of the world's biggest bands. Heavy music with a wink underneath always lasts longer, and he is a big reason Rammstein has that wink.
