My Take

Francesca Archibugi is a filmmaker I'd happily champion. A Roman director and screenwriter, she arrived with a bang in 1989, sweeping Best New Director at both the David di Donatello and the Nastro d'Argento, then went on to collect screenplay, story and best-film honors and even a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. What draws me to her is the tenderness of her gaze: works like Mignon è partita and Towards Evening attend to children and families with a delicacy that's rare and hard-won. She strikes me as a quiet conscience of Italian cinema, more interested in human fragility than spectacle, and I value that enormously.
