François Chatriot

I have a soft spot for rally drivers, and François Chatriot is exactly the kind of name I love digging into. Born in Compiègne in 1952, he was a Renault works driver in a Renault 5 Turbo and won the French rally title in 1989 and 1990 in a BMW M3, and rally itself tells the story: tarmac, gravel, snow, nothing but a pace note and a co-driver's voice between you and the trees. To have run that discipline through a French era of the sport demands a focus most athletes never face. Podiums fade from memory; the thousands of unseen forest miles don't. That quiet, repetitive mastery is what I respect most about the craft.
