My Take
Most hotel executives stay safely behind the corporate logo. Fumiko Motoya, president of APA Hotel, put her own face and her trademark wide-brimmed hats on the advertising and turned herself into the chain's most recognizable asset. It should have been embarrassing. Instead it worked, saving a fortune in endorsement fees while making the company name impossible to forget. Born in Fukui in 1947, she went from Fujishima High School to Hosei University and ended up as the public face of a national hotel group, and along the way she has published books and released music as well. Opinion on her divides sharply. What I cannot argue with is the nerve it takes to make a product out of yourself.
