Gary Kemp

Gary Kemp is, to me, the unsung architect of an entire era. Writing all 23 of Spandau Ballet's hit singles, including True and Gold, is not just talent, it is the work of a genuine craftsman. I find it telling that he never stopped expanding, moving into acting on stage and screen rather than coasting on past glory. There is a literate, almost romantic quality to his songwriting that elevates 1980s new wave above mere style. I have a real soft spot for creators who can build both the words and the music, and Kemp did exactly that with elegance.
