My Take
George Michael is, for my money, one of the most underrated pure voices pop ever produced. The Wham! confetti made it easy to dismiss him, but listen to Careless Whisper or his live covers and you hear a singer of genuinely operatic control. What moves me most is the gap between the tabloid caricature and the man: the quiet, enormous charity, the long fight to own his art and identity. That the writer of Last Christmas died on Christmas Day still feels like pop's cruelest piece of poetry. His Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2023 was overdue recognition.
