My Take

Eddie Floyd is Stax history in human form. When I think of that Memphis soul sound from the sixties and seventies, Knock on Wood is one of the first songs that comes to mind, and he co-wrote and sang it. What I respect is that he was a songwriter as much as a performer, the kind of craftsman who fed an entire label's catalog from inside. The fact that he is still active online, with his own site and presence, tells me he never fully stepped away. To me he is a reminder that soul music was built by working musicians who did the quiet writing as well as the singing.
