Gianna Nannini

Gianna Nannini has, to my ear, one of the most soulful voices in European rock. Born in Siena and educated at its university, she could have stayed comfortable, but instead she carved out a fierce, unmistakable place in a male-dominated scene. Tracks like Bello e impossibile, Meravigliosa creatura, and Fotoromanza swept across Europe for good reason: her raspy, powerful delivery refuses to be polished into something safe. I admire artists who lead with grit rather than gloss, and that she keeps performing decades on only deepens my respect. She made rawness sound like strength, and that is no small feat.
