Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer is the reason I can't watch a Christopher Nolan film without my chest physically vibrating. Born in Frankfurt in 1957 and largely self-taught, this guy redefined what a movie score could be — blending orchestral grandeur with synthesizers in ways that feel less like background music and more like a second nervous system for whatever's on screen. The Lion King, Gladiator, The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar — the list of iconic sounds attached to his name is almost unfair. He picked up his first Oscar for The Lion King back in 1995 and has barely slowed down since, earning a Golden Globe for Dune in 2021. What gets me is that he never sounds like he's repeating himself; each score has its own gravitational pull. The man made a ticking watch feel like the apocalypse in Dunkirk. That's not composing — that's sorcery.
