My Take
For a stretch in the mid-2010s, Haruka Kodama was the face of HKT48. She fronted three of the group's singles — "Hikaeme I Love You!", "12 Byō" (shared with Sakura Miyawaki), and "Shekarashika!" — which is about as clear a statement of who the group's center was as the industry ever makes. She was also, crucially, from Fukuoka, which mattered for a group built on regional identity. What interests me more is the part that came after. Idol careers are usually narrated as a rise and then a graduation, as if the second half were an epilogue. Hers has been more complicated than that: she stepped back from activity for health reasons, returned, eventually left the group, and has been rebuilding as a performer on her own terms since. Carrying a franchise in your late teens and then having to figure out who you are without it is genuinely hard work. Born in 1996, she has plenty of runway. The second act is the one I would watch.
