My Take

Hauschka, otherwise known as Volker Bertelmann, is an artist I find endlessly inventive. He built his name on prepared piano, wedging objects into the strings to coax out percussive, unexpected textures, and somehow that experimental streak carried him all the way to an Academy Award and a BAFTA for All Quiet on the Western Front. That score is haunting, all dread and restraint, and it deserved every prize. I also admire that he started out as a rapper before reinventing himself as a composer. His work on One Life shows another, gentler side. Few film composers feel as willing to keep tinkering with sound itself.
