Hazel O'Connor

Hazel O'Connor fascinates me because she refused to be just one thing. Singer, songwriter, film and stage actor, she stood right at the center of the early-1980s British new wave and made all of it her own. Her run with Breaking Glass and singles like Will You? could have boxed her into a single moment, but what I admire is the personal voice she carried through every role. She wasn't merely versatile; she was authored, putting her own conviction into the work. Decades on, that intensity still feels undiminished, and I think she remains an underrated emblem of her era's restless creative energy.
