My Take
Hiroki Hasegawa is my favourite kind of late bloomer. Born in Tokyo in 1977 and trained as a stage actor at the Bungaku-za after Chuo University, he did not start turning up on Japanese television until around 2008, and in films from 2011, past thirty by the time most actors have either broken through or quit. Then the range arrived all at once: the unsettling romantic lead of Second Virgin, the ineffectual father in the enormous hit Kaseifu no Mita, the fast-talking official trying to hold a country together in Shin Godzilla, and finally Akechi Mitsuhide carrying a year-long NHK historical drama. His 2012 Elan d'or newcomer prize looks almost comic in hindsight. What ties those parts together, for me, is his gift for playing men who are out of their depth and hiding it. That is not a face an actor who succeeded early ever learns.
