Hitomi Nabatame

With Hitomi Nabatame, I recognise the voice before I recognise the name, which is probably the highest compliment you can pay a voice actor. Born in 1976 on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, she works as a voice actress, an actress and a singer, affiliated with Ken Production. Her register sits lower and steadier than the anime default, which is why she so often ends up playing the older-sister figure, the one who keeps the cast from falling apart. Sharp-tongued characters in her hands never curdle into unpleasantness, because there is warmth underneath the delivery. She also committed fully to the bit at least once, singing opening themes for the Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu series under the character name Miran Himemiya. She was born on Sado but grew up in Yokohama, and built her career on nothing but a voice. She is not a headline-generating performer. She is the kind of professional whose presence you keep rediscovering, series after series, for decades.
