Ian Gillan is simply a living legend to me. As the voice of Deep Purple, his powerful, wide-ranging vocals helped define an entire era of hard rock. I love that he started out idolizing Elvis and grinding through local bands before his breakthrough; that apprenticeship is audible in the authority of his delivery. To still be performing nearly eight decades into life is remarkable, and it makes him one of rock's last great firsthand witnesses to its golden age.
