Ilie Năstase

Ilie Nastase is one of tennis history's great characters, and I love him for it. When the ATP first crowned a world No. 1, he was the man on the throne, holding it for 40 weeks. At 183 cm he played with flair and a famously combustible temperament that earned him a reputation as the sport's brilliant troublemaker. The Tennis Hall of Fame and Romania's Star order confirm the talent, but for me the appeal is the personality: a player who turned every match into theatre, then carried that energy into acting and politics. Pure, irrepressible showmanship.
