My Take

Jonathan Lee, or 李宗盛, sits at the center of Mandopop in a way that's hard to overstate. I find it telling that he's called one of the most influential and respected figures in that whole world, because the great producers usually work in the background while singers get the spotlight. Being both a singer-songwriter and a producer out of Taipei means he shaped not just his own records but the careers and sound of others. I haven't grown up inside Mandarin pop, so I take that reverence seriously, the way I would for a Quincy Jones figure. His pen seems to matter even more than his voice.
