My Take

Jimmy Somerville's falsetto is one of those instruments that shouldn't exist in pop music, and yet there it is, piercing through every synth line Bronski Beat ever laid down. What I admire most is how he fused that voice with real social courage: Smalltown Boy wasn't just a hit, it was a lifeline for kids who felt invisible in the 1980s. He sang openly about identity when doing so carried genuine risk. Decades later, the song still sounds urgent rather than nostalgic, which is the rarest trick in pop. For me, Somerville proves that a dance record can carry as much emotional weight as any ballad.
