John Arcilla

Arcilla's Volpi Cup win at the Venice Film Festival was one of those moments that made me sit up, because it announced Filipino cinema to audiences who'd been ignoring it. What I admire is the patience behind that breakthrough: decades of disciplined work before global recognition arrived in his fifties. He can anchor a film as a hero or devour a scene as a villain, and that range is rare. To me he represents the untapped depth of Asian screen talent that the West is only beginning to notice. I'd happily watch him in anything, and I keep recommending Heneral Luna.
