My Take
What I admire most about Joko Anwar is that he came to filmmaking through journalism and criticism. A director who once dissected other people's films tends to build his own with unusual structural rigor, and you feel that discipline in his work. Hailing from Medan in North Sumatra, he has done more than perhaps anyone to push Indonesian cinema, and his horror in particular, onto the world stage. Satan's Slaves elevated an entire regional genre. I respect filmmakers who keep one foot in the trenches even after earning acclaim, and I expect Anwar to keep delivering bold work for years.
