My Take
Julie Benz is one of those actors who quietly built one of the most memorable TV résumés of her generation, and I don't think she gets nearly enough credit for it. Growing up in Pittsburgh, training at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts — and apparently competing as an ice dancer along the way, which is just delightfully unexpected — she brought a real fragility and depth to every role she took. Her turn as Darla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel was genuinely haunting, but it was Rita on Dexter that made me sit up and pay attention: a warm, believable presence who earned both a Satellite Award and a Saturn Award. That's not luck, that's craft.
