My Take
Julie Christie won the Best Actress Oscar at twenty-six and became the face of Swinging Sixties London, yet what I admire most is what she did with that fame, which is largely refuse it. Born in Chabua, India, she traded the Hollywood machine for projects she believed in and decades of activism. Her late-career turn in Away from Her proved her instrument only deepened with age. Even returning to study at the Open University speaks to a restless, unflashy intelligence. In an era that consumes beautiful young women, Christie kept her own counsel, and that integrity is genuinely rare and admirable.
