My Take
Kalen Anzai was born on 15 August 1999 in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture. She was known first as a fashion model, then signed to Avex Trax and debuted as a singer in May 2019 — a sequence worth pausing on, because it is the harder direction to travel. An image can open a door in Japanese entertainment, but it also sets an expectation that whatever comes next is decoration. She has since worked across formats, appearing in the drama M: There's Someone I Love and in Unity of Japan: Hokkaido, while continuing to release music as a singer-songwriter. That last label is the one I watch. Anyone can be given songs; claiming to write them invites a stricter kind of listening, and she has chosen to invite it. Whether the writing eventually outgrows the visual identity she started with is the real question of her career, and it is still open.
