My Take

Karen Lancaume's career sits at a fault line I find genuinely uncomfortable to write about. She crossed from adult film into the mainstream with 2000's Baise-moi, performing unsimulated scenes in a movie that scandalized France and forced a real debate about what cinema is allowed to show. That she died in 2005, at just 32, reframes the whole thing for me. The Hot d'Or nomination tells me the work was taken seriously by her own industry, but the brevity of it all leaves me less interested in the controversy and more in the person who got flattened into one notorious title.
