My Take
I have always had a soft spot for the mezzo-soprano voice, that smoky, slightly shadowed warmth the sopranos rarely reach. Karine Deshayes, born near Paris and trained at the Sorbonne, built her reputation on Rossini and Bellini bel canto, and France has honoured her generously, from the Order of Arts and Letters to the Legion of Honour. To me those medals signal a singer her own country treasures, not just a passing name. She may be little known in Japan, but that is exactly why I want to flag her, a genuine talent validated where it matters most, on the great stages of Europe.
Overview
Karine Deshayes (French: [ka.ʁin de.ɛ]; born 25 January 1973) is a French mezzo-soprano. She is noted for her interpretations of bel canto roles (principally Rossini and Bellini).
