Kazufumi Miyazawa

For most listeners outside Japan, Kazufumi Miyazawa is the man behind "Shima Uta" — and that one song has traveled further than almost any other Japanese pop record. What I find remarkable is that he wasn't from Okinawa at all. Born in Kofu, Yamanashi in 1966, he fell in love with Okinawan folk music from the outside and then did the hard, patient work of learning it rather than merely borrowing its surface.
