Keiichi Okabe

For me, Keiichi Okabe is the sound of NieR, music that does not merely score a scene but seems to ache with a wordless grief and longing. Starting at Namco in 1994 writing for arcade machines, he became one of the most distinctive voices in game music, with Tekken and Drakengard also to his name. What I value is that his compositions feel like storytelling in their own right; you can almost see narrative unfold in the melody alone. Running MONACA and mentoring other composers, he is craftsman and entrepreneur at once. There is a clarity in his work that I keep returning to.
