Kenichi Ikezoe

Racing fans outside Japan may not know the phrase, but Kenichi Ikezoe carries a nickname that says everything: "The Grand Prix Man." Japanese racing has two races the public treats as the true showpieces, the Arima Kinen and the Takarazuka Kinen, and Ikezoe has won them seven times between them. That is the part I find hard to shrug off. Plenty of jockeys accumulate wins across a season. Very few keep turning up in the one or two races a year that the whole country actually watches. Luck explains one of those. It does not explain seven. Born in 1979 and riding out of the Japan Racing Association's Ritto Training Center, he stands 162 cm, which is ordinary for the job and extraordinary for what the job involves: steering half a tonne of animal through a wall of noise while making split-second decisions. His younger brother Manabu is a trainer, so the family sits on both sides of the sport. What I take from Ikezoe is a specific kind of talent, the ability to be at your sharpest exactly when everyone is looking.
