Kenjiro Nomura

Kenjiro Nomura belongs to a category of player I have a lot of time for: the one-club infielder whose value is easier to feel than to measure. Born in Saiki, Oita in 1966, he came out of Komazawa University and spent his entire career with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, leading them to the Central League pennant in 1991. Hiroshima later honored his number 7. What interests me is how differently a career like this ages compared to a slugger's. Home run totals travel well across decades; the contribution of a shortstop who sets the tempo of a lineup does not compress neatly into a stat line. Yet ask Carp fans of that era who held the team together and the answer arrives instantly. He has since moved into coaching and commentary, staying inside the same orbit he came up in. Clubs that keep their homegrown players close tend to keep their identity too, and Hiroshima has always understood that better than most.
