Laura Benanti

Laura Benanti is, to me, a quintessential creature of the stage. Making her Broadway debut young as Maria in The Sound of Music and later winning a Tony as Louise in Gypsy signals a performer of real depth. She works in film too, but I sense she truly comes alive singing and acting before a live audience. Few artists balance vocal power and dramatic nuance at this level, and people like her quietly sustain the musical theater tradition. What I value most is that she is celebrated for substance rather than spectacle, the mark of an enduring talent.
