Lily Franky

Honestly, Lily Franky's business card must be a novel — actor, illustrator, writer, lyricist, the man does it all and somehow none of it feels like a stunt. What gets me is the gap: this is a Musashino Art University guy from Kokura in Fukuoka, yet he disappears so completely into these rumpled, slightly sketchy, world-weary uncles that you forget there's craft underneath. That's the trick, really — he looks like he's barely trying, all loose shoulders and lazy drawl, and then he quietly walks off with a Blue Ribbon. I first clocked him through "Tokyo Tower," and the way he can gut-punch you without ever raising his voice tells you everything. He's the kind of talent you can't quite pin down, and I kind of love that about him.
