Lita Ford

Lita Ford earns my respect less for the chart numbers and more for the timing of her arrival. Picking up a guitar as a teenager in the Runaways, then carving out a glam-metal solo career in an era that gave female instrumentalists little room, took real nerve. "Close My Eyes Forever" is the song everyone cites, but I'm more drawn to the grind that preceded it. Her playing never sounds like it's asking permission, and that unapologetic edge is what keeps me coming back. She made space where there wasn't any, and that legacy outlasts any single hit.
