My Take
Lubna Azabal is the kind of actor I gravitate toward: one who carries the weight of a film in her eyes. Her work in Incendies, tracing a mother's brutal history across the Middle East, is the sort of performance that leaves you breathless and silent. That she also writes screenplays signals a restless intelligence. Belgian by birth, she stands at the crossroads of Europe and the Arab world, voicing stories the mainstream often ignores. She earns her place through gravity, not glamour, and I respect that enormously.
