My Take

Madeline Brewer is fearless in a way that keeps pulling me toward her projects. Her Janine on The Handmaid's Tale could have been a one-note tragic figure, but she gave the character a flickering, unpredictable humanity that made every scene tense. Then there is Cam, a horror film she basically carries solo, playing a webcam performer whose identity gets hijacked, and she sells the spiraling paranoia completely. She seems drawn to roles that live on the edge of instability, and she commits to them without vanity. I keep expecting a big breakout, and honestly the talent has been there all along.

She first drew attention as Tricia Miller in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black and went on to a notable role as Janine Lindo in the dystopian drama The Handmaid's Tale. She also starred in the psychological horror film Cam and appeared in the rebooted television series Hemlock Grove.
