My Take

Markus Eisenbichler is exactly the athlete I gravitate toward: a craftsman rather than a celebrity. A Bavarian from Bad Reichenhall, he became a large-hill World Champion and added team and mixed-team golds, which is elite company by any measure. At 175 cm he is not physically imposing, yet ski jumping rewards nerve and precision over size, and he supplied both in abundance. There is something almost meditative about throwing yourself off a hill thousands of times in pursuit of a few perfect flights. I respect that quiet, repetitive devotion far more than flashier sporting fame.
