Seiichi Tanabe

Seiichi Tanabe is one of those actors I always find myself trusting the second he steps into frame. He's a tall, clean-lined presence from Tokyo, and he never seems to be fighting for attention; he just plants himself at the edge of a scene and quietly squares the whole thing up. What gets me is that he's not only a performer but a director and writer too, so there's this craftsman's logic under everything he does, an understanding of how a moment is built that makes his stillness feel deliberate rather than passive. And then he turns around and draws those gloriously wobbly pictures that earned him the joking title of "master painter" and even a solo exhibition, which I love. That gap, dignified gravity on one side and a sly, easygoing warmth on the other, is exactly what makes him so weirdly endearing to me. Total class act, and clearly in on the joke.
