Ineko Arima

I'll be honest, Ineko Arima belongs to an era I mostly know through grainy prints and reverent essays, and I find that kind of distance weirdly romantic. She came up in postwar Japanese cinema's golden stretch, the black-and-white years when an actress's whole presence could carry a frame, and from what survives she had exactly that quiet, composed luminosity that doesn't really exist anymore. Born in Osaka in 1932, which, sue me, makes me root for her a little harder. What gets me is the longevity: a 1995 Medal with Purple Ribbon isn't for a hot streak, it's for decades of staying serious about the craft. She worked for Ozu, Naruse and Kon Ichikawa, and in 1954 co-founded the Ninjin Club with Keiko Kishi and Yoshiko Kuga. That's the rare, durable kind of stardom.
