Masakazu Katsura

Masakazu Katsura does two things almost nobody manages at once: superheroes and romance. Born in Fukui in 1962, he made his name with the hero series Wing-Man, spent the nineties on Video Girl Ai and I"s, among the most precisely observed portraits of adolescent longing in manga, then returned to darker heroics with Zetman. That is enormous range for one artist, and his draftsmanship is good enough that the wider industry keeps borrowing it, from Iria: Zeiram the Animation to Tiger & Bunny, Garo: Crimson Moon and the game Astral Chain. If there is a through line, it is forty years spent chasing the exact moment a drawing makes you believe someone is cool, or worth wanting.
