Mathias Abel

Mathias Abel intrigues me as a defender who came home. Born in Kaiserslautern and schooled in the local club's youth ranks, this 188 cm German defender played for Mainz 05, Schalke 04 and, on loan, Hamburger SV before returning to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 2008. Defenders rarely get the headlines strikers do, yet they are the backbone of any side, and I have a soft spot for that unglamorous reliability. I picture a disciplined, physical centre-back who let his positioning and tackling do the talking. Players like Abel remind me that a team's quiet workhorses deserve far more credit than the scoreboard ever gives them.
