My Take

Maya Jasanoff is, to me, one of the most exciting historians working today. As Harvard's Coolidge Professor she studies Britain and its empire, but her gift is telling that story from the margins, through the displaced and the dispossessed rather than the conquerors. The Guggenheim, the George Washington Book Prize, the Cundill, the awards confirm what readers already feel: she turns dense archival history into prose you actually want to read. Making the past breathe again is rare talent, and I deeply admire it.
