My Take

Mehdi Mahdavikia is an Iranian football hero, plain and simple. A relentless right-sided dynamo who tore up that flank for years at Hamburg in Germany, you can't really tell the story of Iranian football without him. Since hanging up his boots he's moved into coaching, including youth development and his own academy, and that instinct to pass on what he carried to the next generation is what really gets me. The sense of responsibility in a man who ran himself into the ground for his country is genuinely admirable. He's someone I root for not just for his playing, but for how he's lived after it.
