Chiang Peng-Lung

Chiang draws my interest precisely because he came from somewhere small. Born in 1976 in Penghu, a scattering of islands off Taiwan, he made his name on the world table tennis stage, and that journey alone carries a certain romance for me. Known for an idiosyncratic penhold style with unconventional rubber that unsettled opponents, he was among the players who upheld Taiwanese table tennis through the late nineties and early two-thousands. He took bronze in singles at the 2001 World Championships after beating Timo Boll and Liu Guoliang, and I always root for athletes who chase the world like that. He struck me as a craftsman who left a real mark despite the quiet.
