Melissa Auf der Maur

Melissa Auf der Maur is one of those figures who feels genuinely cooler than the spotlight ever gave her credit for. She came up through the Montreal indie scene, formed Tinker at Concordia, and then got the call that most bassists only dream about — joining Hole right as they were ascending into mainstream rock consciousness. Her bass work on Celebrity Skin is understated but rock-solid, the kind of playing that holds everything together without begging for attention. What I find most interesting is how she never just settled into being "that bassist from Hole." She released solo work, got deep into photography and film production, and kept her creative identity distinctly her own. There's something quietly admirable about a musician from Montreal who passed through the heart of 90s alternative rock royalty and came out the other side fully herself.
