My Take
Michael Crawford fascinates me because of the sheer distance he travelled as a performer. Best known for slapstick comedy as the hapless Frank Spencer, he then became the original, definitive Phantom of the Opera, and the contrast still amazes me. Comedians who can break your heart are vanishingly rare, and Crawford did both at the highest level, collecting Tonys, an Olivier and a CBE along the way. I find that range, plus the discipline to sing eight shows a week, genuinely humbling. He is proof that comic timing and dramatic gravity spring from the same well.
